According to a 2004 study by the Centers for Disease Control, 4.5 million children ages 3-17, 7.4 percent, had ADHD. Chace, a 14-year-old boy with ADHD, walked into an office complete with calming wind chimes by the window, peaceful music overhead and a hospital bed with black straps lying by the pillows- feeling anything but calm and focused when he prepared for his first biofeedback session. “I don’t know if skeptical is the right word, but I didn’t really know about it,” said Diana Fors, Chace’s mom. “Chace has been on every ADHD medicine there is, it’s something we’ve been going through for 10 years, so we gave biofeedback a try and I was pleasantly surprised.” By his fourth 90-minute session, Chace walked into the same office, went straight to the bed and fastened the straps around his ankles, wrists, and head himself as he patiently waited for Freytag to set up the computer. “Chace is no longer on Ritalin, and that is the reason I did biofeedback. I don’t think kids should be on medicine unless it’s a last resort,” Fors said. “I would recommend biofeedback to anyone. I think doctors should prescribe it first, because I don’t think that having a child on pills at five years old is good, because they learn to think they need a pill to be normal.” Print Brochure Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback  Mayo Clinic - Biofeedback: Using your mind to improve your health                         Brown University Update on Alternative Treatments  517.787.WISH (9474)
